If you’re new to dancing, you might be wondering what to wear for your first class at the Arthur Murray Dance Center of Gaithersburg. While you might want to purchase a pair of dance shoes and practice clothing later on for the more advanced classes, beginners can simply wear whatever they already have in their closet.
In general, we recommend you wear something that makes you feel comfortable, confident and ready to move. Depending on whether you signed up for group ballroom lessons or wedding dance lessons, you may want to keep the following tips in mind.
Ballroom Dance Lessons
Our instructors recommend you wear comfortable shoes that stay securely on your feet. Make sure they fit properly and that all laces and straps are tightened. Shoes with leather or suede soles are the best choice, as they’ll allow you to glide easily across the floor. However, a pair of dress shoes will do in a pinch. Try to avoid sneakers or gym shoes because the rubber soles are built for traction rather than the smooth moves of dancing. Women don’t have to wear heels, but they are certainly welcome to.
Wedding Lessons
Practicing for the big day? For those who signed up to take wedding dance lessons, most of the same recommendations apply. However, it’s also a good idea to wear the same shoes that you plan on wearing during your first dance as newlyweds. That way, you’ll become used to moving in them to help make your special moment flow that much more smoothly.
